Frank L. Jirouch (left) and George J. Fischer (right) work on a sculpture of Christ on the cross for Messiah Lutheran Church in North Olmsted in 1953. The Christ figure in this sculpture was blond gumwood, and the cross of oak. Fischer (1876–1958), a master woodcarver, was a lifelong member of another Lutheran church, Grace Lutheran Church in Cleveland Heights, for which he did multiple projects, including crafting its baptismal font. He had just finished working on another project—a large crucifix— for his church when he slipped on ice when leaving his Superior Avenue studio and broke his hip toward the end of his life. | Creator: Cleveland Plain Dealer | Date: April 19, 1953 | Source: Cleveland Public Library Digital Newspaper CollectionDownload Original File
